The 2011 Penofin Jazz Festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 13-14 at the Barbara and Skip Newell property in Potter Valley, California. The 18th annual event will begin with a workshop by the Rich Halley Quartet on Friday, May 13 with the main festival on Saturday, May 14.
Concert performances will be the afternoon of Saturday, May 14:

1:45 — Rich Halley Quartet with Michael Vlatkovich, Clyde Reed and Carson Halley
3:15 — Indigo Trio with Nicole Mitchell, Harrison Bankhead and Hamid Drake
4:45 — Dan Raphael with Rich Halley and Carson Halley
5:30 — People, Places and Things with Mike Reed, Greg Ward, Tim Haldeman and Jason Roebke
Prize winning poet Dottie Grossman and standout trombonist Michael Vlatkovich are a unique duo from Los Angeles who present a finely tuned jazz informed synthesis of poetry and music. Dottie's poems recently appeared in Poetry magazine and were awarded the 2010 Wood Prize.
The Rich Halley Quartet features the saxophonist/composer with trombonist Michael Vlatkovich, Clyde Reed (bass) and Carson Halley (drums). The quartet combines roots with the unexpected, and mixes striking compositions with in-the-moment sound exploration. The Quartet's new release, "Requiem for a Pit Viper" has just been released on Pine Eagle Records.
Nicole Mitchell was voted "Top Flutist 2010" in the Down Beat Critic's Poll. Nicole's groups tour internationally and she currently teaches at the University of Illinois. She is the recipient of numerous awards and is the first women president of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. The Indigo Trio features Nicole with outstanding Chicago bassist Harrison Bankhead and fantastic drummer Hamid Drake.
Dan Raphael is a unique dynamic poet based in Portland, Oregon. He recently published "Impulse & Warp: The Selected 20th Century Poems". Dan performs with Rich and Carson Halley. Their CD "Children of the Blue Supermarket" was just released on Pine Eagle Records.
Mike Reed's People, Places and Things is an exciting quartet that was formed to explore the under-recognized traditions of Chicago jazz in the 50's and extend those concepts into the present day. People, Places and Things is a local favorite in Chicago and has recently received significant national recognition. The group includes Mike Reed (drums), Greg Ward (alto sax), Tim Haldeman (tenor sax) and Jason Roebke (bass).
