10th Annual Jazz Festival "Jazz-The All American Art"

Ukiah, California - Friday and Saturday May 17th & 18th, Penofin-Performance Coatings Inc. held its 10th Annual Jazz Festival. Once again The Rich Halley Trio entertained and worked with a group of student musicians from Ukiah High School. "Rich Halley should be commended for his dedication to music and to bringing new and different styles to these children each year," says Toni Adams Executive Vice President of Performance Coatings. "No matter how large or small the crowd, Rich tries to show each of the young musicians individual attention, and I'm sure in the nine years he and his group have been doing this, they have caught more than a few of these kids on fire with the love of music." Students were given jazz festival tee-shirts featuring the art of last years 1st place winner, Seth Castro of River Oaks Charter School, in the children's art contest.
Saturday, the festivities began in the 80-year-old barn at Spotswood that has been lovingly restored by Dr. Barbara Newell, the CEO, and Castle Newell, the President of Performance Coatings Inc., and owners of Spotswood. Guests strolled the grounds and beautiful gardens soaking in the sun, touring the Hukam Maj Arabian Horse Ranch, and visiting with the newest addition Diablo Maj, two-week-old colt, the father being Rushan, the 1997 British Supreme National Champion Arab Stallion.
The Michael Vlatkovich Trio began with a spirited set of improvisational jazz featuring Michael and his trombone. The Rich Halley Trio added a zestful air to the evening with their rich, expressionistic free-jazz style reminiscent of Ornette Coleman, late John Coltrane, and other '60s icons. Bobby Bradford and his quintet ended the day with his insightful, elegant style of contemporary jazz, which is both adventurous and soulful.
The entries in the Annual Children's Art Festival were displayed in the barn and later in the evening, the musicians selected the winners who were given cash awards for each of their school's Art Departments.
